Behaviors We Treat
OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE DISORDER (ODD)
The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry defines ODD as “an ongoing pattern of uncooperative, defiant, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that seriously interferes with the youngster’s day to day functioning.” Common signs of ODD include frequent tantrums, deliberately agitating others, blaming others for their own actions, questioning rules, and a revenge-seeking and spiteful attitude. Symptoms typically present at home or at school where there are rigid rule systems are in place, and there is a range of severity in these symptoms. Treatment of ODD can be very successful when using positive reinforcement therapy plan. It is important to have your child evaluated if you suspect that they may be suffering from ODD so that negative behaviors can be replaced with positive behaviors before it causes issues later in their life. Since children typically act out with adult figures they are close to, it is important to choose an evaluator who is experienced in many forms of behavioral disorders since your child may not present all of their symptoms in a foreign space such as a doctor’s office.
